Piel 6 Tensor chip — runs hotter, so thermal paste matters

The Piel 6 uses Google's Tensor (Tensor) for on-device AI features — Call Screen, Magic Eraser, Voice Recorder transcription. It draws noticeably more power under sustained load than equivalent Snapdragon phones. Any logic-board or back-glass repair on the Piel 6 needs the thermal paste freshly applied or you'll see throttling within 5 minutes of heavy use. We use Arctic MX-6 paste on every Pixel that comes through.

Piel 6 USB-C — data pins wear before power pins

Apple's USB-C ports use slimmer data pins than the power pins around them. On the Piel 6 the most common port symptom we see is "charges fine, but won't connect to a Mac". That's the data lanes worn out, not the cable. A port replacement on the Piel 6 takes about 45 minutes, reuses the original battery, and we test data-transfer speeds with a Thunderbolt drive before handover.

Piel 6 Find My Device lock — sign out before drop-off

Like Apple's Activation Lock, Google's Find My Device locks the Piel 6 to the original Google account. If we receive a device that's locked to someone else's account (common with marketplace buys) we can't bypass it — the original owner needs to sign in remotely and remove the device. We check this at intake in under a minute so the bench time isn't wasted.

Before booking a Piel 6 — Find My / Activation Lock check

A Piel 6 signed in to your Apple ID is straightforward for us to repair. But if the device is locked to a previous owner's account (common with marketplace buys) we can't bypass it — the right fix is to sign in with the original owner's iCloud password and disable Find My. We run this check at intake in under a minute so nothing wastes your time on the bench.

Pixel 7 Pro and 8 Pro mount the USB-C port to the mid-frame with a single screw and clip — easy to damage during DIY removal. We replace with a flex-pre-attached module so we never need to reflow the original board.

Early Pixel 6 batches have known thermal issues. Customers come in for 'screen burn' — the real cause is degraded thermal pad. We re-paste the SoC; ~75% of cases settle without any other repair.

Pixel 4 and 4 XL are the worst we see for battery swelling. The cell pushes the OLED up by a millimetre before customers notice. Continuing to use it risks cracking the panel from below.

Pixel 6+ uses an optical fingerprint sensor under the OLED. After a screen swap the sensor needs Google's Recovery calibration — most shops skip it. The customer ends up with a reader that works ~60% of the time.
