From the bench

Notes from our workshop — what we see on Google Pixel

Real observations from our certified technicians — the things you only learn after thousands of repairs on the same model. No marketing spin, just what we actually deal with every day.

Pixel 6 / 7 / 8 in-display fingerprint sensor

Pixel 6 onwards uses an optical fingerprint sensor under the OLED. After a screen swap the sensor needs a calibration step — not all shops do it, and the customer ends up with a fingerprint reader that 'works sometimes'. We run Google's Recovery calibration before handover so the reader returns to factory accuracy.

Battery swelling on Pixel 4 and 4 XL

Pixel 4 series is the most common model we see with battery swelling — usually pushes the screen up by a millimetre before the customer notices. Replacement is the right fix; continuing to use it risks the OLED panel cracking from below.

Charging port on Pixel 7 Pro and 8 Pro

The Pixel 7 Pro and 8 Pro USB-C port is held to the mid-frame with a single screw and clip — easy to damage during DIY removal. Symptoms: phone charges but only on the wireless pad. We replace the port with a flex-pre-attached module so we never need to reflow the original board.

Tensor chip overheating on Pixel 6 — symptom vs. cause

Early Pixel 6 batches have known thermal issues with the Tensor SoC. Customers come in for 'screen burn'; the real cause is a degraded thermal pad. We re-paste the SoC with high-conductivity compound — about 75% of cases come back well within Pixel's thermal envelope without any other repair.

Factory unlock vs. carrier unlock

Pixels bought through US carriers are sometimes locked even after they're paid off. We can't unlock a carrier-locked Pixel — but we'll confirm the carrier status in 30 seconds on the bench so the customer knows before they pay for any other repair.

How Pixel 8 Pro devices actually break

What we log in our intake notes — patterns specific to this device family, not generic advice.

Fingerprint stops "working sometimes"

Pixel 6+ uses an optical fingerprint sensor under the OLED. After a screen swap the sensor needs Google's Recovery calibration — most shops skip it. The customer ends up with a reader that works ~60% of the time.

Calibration miss

Battery lifts the screen on Pixel 4

Pixel 4 and 4 XL are the worst we see for battery swelling. The cell pushes the OLED up by a millimetre before customers notice. Continuing to use it risks cracking the panel from below.

Time-sensitive

Tensor overheating ≠ "screen burn"

Early Pixel 6 batches have known thermal issues. Customers come in for 'screen burn' — the real cause is degraded thermal pad. We re-paste the SoC; ~75% of cases settle without any other repair.

Tensor quirk

Pro USB-C port held by one screw

Pixel 7 Pro and 8 Pro mount the USB-C port to the mid-frame with a single screw and clip — easy to damage during DIY removal. We replace with a flex-pre-attached module so we never need to reflow the original board.

Repair excellence

Our process

Four clean steps from drop-off to done — transparent at every stage.

Free 20-point bench diagnostic

A free on-the-spot diagnostic on your Pixel 8 Pro — battery health, hidden water indicators, True Tone status, every sensor and a touch-grid stress test. You see the actual fault before any quote.

Written quote, signed off

A written quote with the part tier you picked, labour estimate and same-day vs next-day timeline. You sign before we open the device — what you saw at the start is what you pay at pickup.

Calibrated-bench repair

Repair runs on calibrated gear: torque-controlled drivers (no stripped screws), ESD-safe mat, hot-plate at 65 °C for clean adhesive release. Each component on your Pixel 8 Pro is tested as it goes back in — not just at the end.

Full QA before handover

Final QA covers Face ID / fingerprint, True Tone, multi-touch, every mic, every speaker, every camera lens, every sensor, wireless charging and a charge-discharge cycle. Photos at start and end go on your Pixel 8 Pro repair record.

Privacy-first

Your data & privacy matter

Privacy-first Pixel 8 Pro repair with clear policies and minimal access.

Device stays locked — always

We never ask for your passcode, PIN or Face ID. Every Pixel 8 Pro repair is done with the device locked. If a sign-in is required to verify a feature, we hand it back to you to do it.

Locked cabinet, key access only

Devices left overnight go straight into a CCTV-covered, key-locked cabinet at the back of the workshop. Staff never take customer devices home.

Chain-of-custody log on every job

We timestamp who received it, who worked on it and who handed it back. The log includes photos at intake and after each part swap — you can ask to see it any time.

No cloud, no backups, no snooping

We don't open Photos, Messages, banking apps, or sign into iCloud / Google. Repair Wi-Fi is isolated from anything personal. Data recovery is a separate, signed service — never automatic.
